FOLIO-8_
Acoustic Synthesizer & Loop Deck // HARDWARE REVISION 2.4

Tactile cardboard skin.
Motorized tape loop core.

FOLIO-8 is an analog-digital hybrid synthesizer built into laser-creased Japanese craft cellulose. Touch exposed copper bus bars, trigger dual micro-cassette motorized loops, and shape harmonic resonance without screens or menus.

Chassis Anatomy

Die-Cut Kraft Fiber Enclosure

Each FOLIO-8 outer body is precision-stamped from 1,200 GSM recycled wood pulp treated with organic pine resin. The structure breathes like an acoustic instrument body, providing mechanical dampening for analog warmth that plastic and aluminum cases actively reflect away.

Weight: 840g Impact rating: Class-4 cellulose Thermal drift: < 0.02%

Analog Playback

Direct-Drive Endless Tape Head

A high-torque brushless DC motor pulls an endless 5-second magnetic tape loop across a stereo permalloy head. Continuous opto-coupled voltage control lets you stretch harmonic pitch from sub-audio clicks up to screaming 6kHz overtones with instant tactile drag.

Tape standard: Type-I / CrO2 Motor wow/flutter: 0.14% RMS

Capacitive Modulation

Bare Copper Patch Strips

Instead of bulky 3.5mm jacks, patch points are unmasked gold-plated copper strips printed directly onto the cellulose face. Connect modulation paths using your fingers as resistive bridges, or clip on magnetic jumpers to lock intricate modulation feedback loops.

Acoustic Body

Micro-Balsa Chamber Transducer

Audio output feeds directly into an internal piezo pickup coupled to a hollow balsa chamber. When playing through monitors, the physical resonance of the instrument adds natural wood harmonic distortion impossible to model in code.

Studio Link

Analog 1V/Oct & Class-Compliant USB

Slot seamlessly into existing modular rigs or digital DAWs. Real analog CV/Gate in/out jacks on the rear panel operate alongside class-compliant 24-bit/96kHz digital audio streaming over USB-C without third-party drivers.

Rear I/O: 4x 3.5mm CV, 2x TRS Audio Power: USB-C Bus 5V 500mA

Synthesis Engine Architecture

Dual-Core Hybrid Sound Generator

Oscillator Array

Discrete Variable Core

Dual analog wavetable oscillators cross-modulated by tape speed fluctuation with smooth triangle-to-pulse morphing.

Filter Section

Diode-Ladder Lowpass

18dB/octave diode ladder filter driven into warm non-linear saturation when feedback loop touches skin resistance.

Envelope & LFO

Transient Attack Slopes

Fast microsecond attack times tuned specifically for snappy percussive plucks and rhythmic mechanical clicking.

// DIRECT CONTACT PLAYING

Skin as a Modulation Source

FOLIO-8 removes the barrier of cold plastic knobs. The tactile fingerboard uses the natural moisture and pressure of your hands to vary resistance between circuit nodes. Squeeze for filter opening, glide two fingers across the bus for microtonal portamento, or tap sharply to ping the balsa resonator.

Organic Microtonality Play outside equal temperament without navigating screen menus. Continuous geometric touch strips let you discover microtonal intervals intuitively.

Micro-Cassette Cartridge Library

Pop in interchangeable paper-shelled loop cartridges. Every cartridge is loaded with endless magnetic tape ready to record live input or play back factory acoustic stems recorded on vintage cellos, pipe organs, and metallic percussion.

CARTRIDGE // 01

Cello Resonances & Bow Noise

Multi-tracked dry acoustic cello loops captured in Birchmoor Hall with ribbon microphones. Ideal for warm ambient pads.

CARTRIDGE // 02

Found Iron & Industrial Clang

Spring reverbs, metallic anvil strikes, and motor hums recorded directly onto high-bias tape for aggressive rhythmic stems.

CARTRIDGE // 03

Raw Endless Blank Tape Loop

Unrecorded magnetic tape loop with magnetic write-head enabled. Capture microphone input in real-time loops on stage.

// DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

Against Disposable Plastic Audio Tech

Most modern electronic musical gear is manufactured with petroleum plastics designed for obsolescence within three seasons. FOLIO-8 takes inspiration from mid-century bookbinding, origami architecture, and heirloom watchmaking. When you handle this instrument, every crease and tactile edge speaks to human craftsmanship. The cellulose composite ages gracefully, developing an authentic patina tailored to the sweat and touch of the musician who plays it daily.

By avoiding menu screens, firmware updates, and bloated companion software, FOLIO-8 remains immediately playable thirty years from today without reliance on external servers or drivers. Power it up, drop the tape, and hear real physics vibrating through wood and paper.

Fits Your Studio Racks and Pedals

Standardized impedance makes FOLIO-8 friendly to guitar stompboxes, Eurorack modular cables, and studio interfaces alike. Run the main output through a tape delay pedal or feed Eurorack clock gates directly into the tape motor step trigger for synchronized polyrhythms.

  • Main balanced line out (TRS 1/4" / 3.5mm)
  • Clock In / Clock Out for drum machines
  • High-gain microphone preamp for tape overdub

"The physical tape drag gives drones an unstable, living character that software LFOs simply simulate without heart. It has become my primary tactile voice for low drone beds."
